South African teen sensation Lara van Niekerk has won SA’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022, in Birmingham, England… and it’s GOLD.

Putting South Africa on the medals table on Day 2, Lara – who hails from Pretoria – also broke another Games record, swimming the women’s 50m breaststroke in 29.73 seconds.

SA’s Olympic medallist Tatjana Schoenmaker finished fourth, and Kaylene Corbett sixth. In April this year 18-year-old Lara made headlines when she beat Tatjana in the 100m breaststroke race to claim the national title in that event.

When she headed off to Budapest in June for the FINA World Championships, Lara told Team SA: “I have always dreamt about racing the best in the world… The past few months have given me a lot of confidence going into races, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.”

An elated Team SA tweeted on Saturday evening: “And it’s GOLD🥇for #TeamSA! Congratulations to Lara van Niekerk on – Champion of the 50m Breaststroke – Halala!”

This is the third Commonwealth Games record she’s broken at the Birmingham Games 2022.

“We’re super proud of you, Lara🥇🇿🇦❤️” said Team SA, adding later: “Take a bow Lara, you’ve made Mzansi proud.”
