South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park has won a Tripadvisor award for being one of the Word’s Top 20 Best Nature Destinations in 2023. The category covers travellers’ favourite places to enjoy the outdoors.
Tripadvisor says that South Africa’s largest game reserve is “basically a synonym for the word ‘safari'” and placed the Kruger at the number 20 spot.
SA’s flagship national park is a fantastic destination to view over 500 bird species, 100 reptiles, nearly 150 mammals, multiple archaeological sites, and a stunning diversity of trees and flowers. “Adventurers can explore the park in a 4×4, take a bush walk or fly above in a hot-air balloon,” says Tripadvisor.
The Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best winners are “determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period, as well as an additional editorial process”, explains Tripadvisor.
Best of the Best is Tripadvisor’s highest honour, and those awarded are among the top 1% of listings on Tripadvisor.
Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park secured third spot, largely due to its astonishing vastness and famous annual migration (of the wildebeest), the largest and longest overland migration on earth.
Mauritius (“arguably Africa’s wealthiest destination, a tropical paradise with tons to do”) made it to the top spot, whilst Kathmandu, Nepal (“surrounded by a valley full of historic sites, ancient temples, shrines, and fascinating villages”) came in second.

- Kruger National Park, South Africa
While South Africa was not featured in the Top 25 Best Places for Culture (Fes/Morocco, Jerusalem, Athens), Trending (Cuba, Hoi An/Vietnam, Mauritius), Popular (Dubai, Bali, London) or Skiing, Cape Town central did make it to the number 16 spot for Best Food Destinations in the World
