A baby monkey in Durban has captured the hearts of South Africans after local community activist and humanitarian Pete Graham rescued it from certain death. In fact, Pete thought the little monkey was dead when he found it lying in the middle of the road…
Writing on his Facebook page Pete’s Post, Pete said:
“This little guy was dead… in the middle of the road. As I approached him a car literally drove over his lifeless body in the dip at Virginia Bush.
”I picked his little body up and took him over to where his mother was on the other side of the fence so she could mourn. I would then have used my shirt to cover him and take his body for burial with dignity…
”And then his eyes fluttered!
”He wasn’t dead but just knocked unconscious! I picked him up again to check for visible injuries and broken bones. No evidence of either. All ten fingers and toes were fine. No unusual bumps on his head or kinks in his tail. (Monkey skeletal structure is practically identical to humans so I figured my human EFR training would work here as well)
”I sat cradling him while his anxious mother and some of the troup looked on. They were a bit agitated but were not alarm signaling.
”I stroked him… whispered gentle reassuring words to him. Over the space of ten minutes his breathing returned to normal and his eyes had regained their focus and shine.
”He took little sips from my water bottle and continued to hold onto my thumb.
“As his strength returned he got more agile in my arms… then with a final squirm he jumped off my lap, ran across the grass and with a spirited leap was back in his mother’s arms… a family again.
”My heart is full… My day is made…
”Live your best life little guy!”
Pete says he feels “truly humbled” to have been able to play a part in the little monkey’s life. Without a doubt, had Pete not come along, the little monkey would never have survived in the middle of the traffic.
Pete says: “It is 10 minutes of my life I will never forget!”
Facebook followers thanked Pete for his kind-heartedness and for restoring their faith in humans.
