Cold front warning: Disruptive rainfall is expected in the Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape is on high alert as disruptive rainfall approaches. The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 weather warning for disruptive rainfall in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 17 May. The weather warning key indicates there is a high chance of minor weather-based impacts.

WEATHER WARNING FOR EASTERN CAPE

The disruptive rainfall warning is valid from 00:00 until 12:00 on Thursday, 18 May. The affected areas include the Kouga and Nelson Mandela Bay metro.

The rain will be brought by a cold front with a ridging high. Rainfall is expected to range between 20 and 30mm.

“Due to the previous rainfall event, soil moisture levels should still be high, enhancing the risk of flooding, especially during the morning,” said the weather service.

THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF DISRUPTIVE RAINFALL INCLUDE:

• Localised flooding of susceptible settlements, informal and formal.
• Localised flooding of roads.
• Localised flooding of low-lying areas and bridges.
• Localised damage to mud-based houses and makeshift houses.
• Difficult driving conditions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.
• Traffic disruptions due to flooding.
• Localised disruption to livelihoods.
