A recent survey revealed that only 3.6% of women in South Africa feel safe in their respective provinces. The results identified the Western Cape as the province where women feel the least safe.

HOW WERE THE STATS CALCULATED?

The insurance company 1st For Women surveyed 6 596 South African women about their perceptions of safety during various everyday situations within their respective provinces. They matched this with reported crime statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

For more accuracy, the company divided the number of responses by the overall number of survey respondents per province. In addition, the SAPS statistics were calculated per 100 000 capita per province.

Furthermore, the company ranked each province across 20 factors. They gave each province a score out of 100 for each factor. Thereafter, they took an average final score across all 20 metrics to allocate an overall score. These 20 factors included the number of reported murders, carjackings, and sexual offences.

WHAT DID THE STATS REVEAL?

According to the survey responses these are the percentages of women who feel unsafe in the following situations:

  • Walking alone during the day – 66%
  • Walking alone at night – 98%
  • Driving alone – 77%
  • Being at home on their own – 54%
  • Going out with friends – 63%

The survey results revealed that 61% of respondents had already been victims of crime. This includes 32% experiencing house break-ins or robberies and 8% experiencing smash-and-grab incidents, according to The Citizen.

As per the average final scores, Limpopo, with a score of 91,11, has the lowest number of women who feel unsafe or have been victims of crime. The Western Cape ranked as the province where women feel the most unsafe with a score of 37,47.

Of the women surveyed, 30% are considering emigration due to safety concerns, according to capetownetc, with the UK being the most popular choice of country to immigrate to.
