South Africa is building its newest Afrikaans-only university campus outside Pretoria, supported by significant backing. The Solidarity movement, in partnership with Kanton Realtors, has already invested R3.2 billion in the ambitious project.

The R3.2-billion campus, part of the Akademia Afrikaans-only university group, represents one of the largest private-sector investments in South Africa over the past decade, reports Daily Investor.

AFRIKAANS-ONLY UNIVERSITY

As The South African reported last year, the Afrikaans-only university has shown remarkable growth since its inception back in 2012. And this has led to strategic expansion across the country. For those unfamiliar, Solidarity backs the Afrikaans-only university, which has expanded from part-time distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to operating study centres across the country.

The new Akademia campus, part of Solidarity’s Toekomsbouer (future builder) initiative, officially broke ground on Monday, 11 August 2025. The group confirms the state-of-the-art campus on Boschkop Road, east of Pretoria, will open for first-year student registration in 2028.

WHAT DOES THE NEW CAMPUS OFFER?

The new Afrikaans-only university campus will accommodate 5 000 full-time undergraduate and 1 500 postgraduate students. Four men’s and women’s residences will house 1 500 students on campus, offering a vibrant and active student life.

The campus will also feature multiple restaurants and cafés, along with extensive sports facilities for rugby, cricket, tennis, athletics, and swimming.

“This ambitious expansion will allow the institution to consolidate its student growth over the past decade,” says managing director, Marthinus Visser. Currently, Afrikaans students can study:

  • BCom in economics and law.
  • BCom in business and financial management.
  • BEd in intermediary education.
  • LLB.
  • BSc in mathematical sciences.
  • BSc in Computer Science BA in communications and journalism.
  • BSocSci in politics.

WESTERN CAPE CAMPUS COMING

Even better, plans to open a full-time Afrikaans-only university campus in the Western Cape in 2026 are already well advanced. This campus will be located within the triangle formed by the northern suburbs, Stellenbosch, and Paarl. Currently, students can access part-time study centres in George, Paarl, and Somerset West.
