Gauteng braces for higher fire risks as temperatures climb
Gauteng residents should brace for changing weather, with hotter days and increased fire risks.

Gauteng residents will experience mixed weather this week, as cool mornings transition into hot days with elevated fire risks.
Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi said central areas will remain cloudy, while Johannesburg will see a sharp rise in temperatures.
“Over Johannesburg, scorching temperatures are expected as the day progresses,” said Rasimphi.
Pretoria will enjoy clear skies before clouds move in later. Although afternoons will be warm, residents should stay alert for possible fire outbreaks due to windy conditions.
Fire Risk Warnings
The South African Weather Service warned of runaway fires across Gauteng’s interior. Rasimphi highlighted the danger, saying windy conditions and rising temperatures could make fires spread rapidly.
“We’re still expecting some runaway fire conditions over most of the interior,” he explained.
Residents are advised to report any signs of smoke immediately. Authorities have highlighted that strong August winds often increase the likelihood of veld fires, placing communities at risk.
Cooler Nights Ahead
Gauteng will experience cold overnight conditions, with some areas seeing freezing temperatures. Daytime heat will return quickly, with Johannesburg reaching highs of around 29°C and Pretoria staying warm, though slightly cooler.
