Starting 29 October this year, travelers will gain more flight options between Cape Town and the United States.

One weekly service currently operating between Johannesburg and Newark will shift to Cape Town.

This move expands Cape Town’s direct transatlantic network while slightly reducing Johannesburg’s flight frequency.

United Airlines adds more frequency to Cape Town

United Airlines, the carrier adjusting, will reduce Johannesburg–Newark flights from daily service to six per week.

At the same time, the airline will expand Cape Town operations to four weekly flights to Newark and three to Washington, D.C.

This shift forms part of United’s strategy to align flight schedules with seasonal demand. The Mother City, which attracts a surge of international visitors during the Southern Hemisphere summer, is becoming an increasingly important gateway for US travelers, while Johannesburg continues to serve as a year-round hub with strong business travel demand.

United Airlines first requested approval to rebalance these routes earlier this year, arguing that more flexibility would allow it to better respond to changing travel patterns.

With Washington, D.C. now added to the Cape Town lineup, South African travellers have more nonstop choices to the US capital, while American tourists gain easier access to the Mother City’s beaches, wine country, and cultural attractions.
