‘An exceptional woman’: Ramaphosa mourns EWN’s Tshidi Madia

President Cyril Ramaphosa and several political parties paid tribute to EWN’s Matshidiso “Tshidi” Madia following her death.

President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to Eye Witness News (EWN) journalist and political editor Matshidiso “Tshidi” Madia.

Madia died on Wednesday morning, 27 August, after a brief illness and hospitalization.

RAMAPHOSA PAYS TRIBUTE TO TSHIDI MADIA 

Since her passing, tributes have poured in for the formidable 42-year-old, who began her career at Primedia Broadcasting as an assistant on EWN’s traffic desk. President Cyril Ramaphosa also expressed his condolences to Madia’s family, friends, and colleagues, noting that she passed away in the prime of her life.

Ramaphosa said Tshidi loved South Africa, which drove her tough questions and her hopeful vision for a better nation.

“We shall continue to work for Tshidi’s South Africa with her now silent pen and voice in our memories and hearts.

“Her passing during Women’s Month reminds us of her stature as a remarkable citizen and thought leader presented to the nation as an outstanding woman. May her soul rest in peace,” the President said. 

CONDOLENCES POUR IN

Political parties and South Africans from all walks of life have also paid tribute to Tshidi Madia, who was well-known for asking politicians tough but necessary questions in her in-depth interviews.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said her professional journey reflected commitment and dedication to journalism. 

“Madia’s contribution to political journalism will be remembered with respect. May her soul rest in peace,” the party said. 

Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane said Tshidi Madia ranked among the hardest-working journalists in the world and contributed to what makes South Africa one of the best nations globally.

“Tshidi took her profession seriously and respected people from all walks of life. It is truly an immeasurable loss to the media community, to the fabric of journalism in South Africa.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the Madia family, to all her friends and work colleagues. We are all shocked, we are hurt, and we are gutted,” Maimane posted on X.

UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party said Madia’s passing is not only a loss to her family and colleagues, but to the nation as a whole.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the entire media fraternity. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
