These are the spots set to offer SA ID renewals
South Africans will soon be able to renew their IDs at multiple locations beyond Home Affairs branches. Here’s what’s new …

Imagine skipping Home Affairs branches forever when renewing your South African ID or passport. TymeBank and Discovery Bank have joined the ‘Home Affairs @ Home’ initiative, which now includes most of the country’s major banks.
Since TymeBank has no branches or ATMs, it will offer ID and passport renewal services through leading retailers such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, and TFG (The Foschini Group) stores. Discovery Bank has taken it further by offering renewals directly through its app, making smartphone applications a game-changer for South Africans.
RENEW YOUR SA ID
Since the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) eHomeAffairs system first came online in 2026 to renew your SA ID, you could transact at a handful of select banks.
The system required banks to replicate the Department of Home Affairs’ complex setups, but frequent offline problems made it ineffective. Frustrated by client complaints over poor service, several participating banks sought to distance themselves from the DHA.
Now, however, the latest initiative is expected to significantly improve and expand DHA’s services. “South Africa is a leader in digital financial services,” said Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber. “And it is high time that we leverage this knowledge to improve the state’s ability to deliver basic services,” he said.
Since last month, the following banks have announced you’ll soon be able to renew your SA ID and passport on their premises:
- ABSA
- African Bank
- Captiec
- FNB
- Discovery Bank
- Investec
- Nedbank
- Standard Bank
- TymeBank
HOME AFFAIRS AT HOME
The Home Affairs @ home initiative remains in its early stages and will start with pilot sites. The department plans to expand the service to 1 000 bank branches by 2029 for South Africans to renew their IDs. TymeBank, the latest addition to the programme, brings a unique advantage through its retail partners, with customers already using more than 1 400 kiosks each month at Pick n Pay, Boxer and TFG stores.
Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber explained that such collaborations will ensure citizens finally benefit from cutting-edge technology. “Home Affairs going digital allows an inclusionary and seamless service. And it will reinforce data security and system integrity, ensuring that you can renew your SA ID and passport with the highest levels of protection and reliability,” concludes Dr. Schreiber.
