President Cyril Ramaphosa concluded his US visit by expressing hope that the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will be renewed.

During his four-day trip to the United Nations General Assembly this week, Ramaphosa met with representatives from various countries to discuss bilateral relations and engaged with businesses on investment opportunities.

He also held high-level talks with members of the US Chamber of Commerce and other dignitaries to encourage American investment in South Africa and strengthen ties with the United States.

A PLEA FOR THE RENEWAL OF AGOA

The US has extended AGOA several times since its inception in 2000, with its current validity extending until September 2025.

The act gives qualifying sub-Saharan African nations duty-free access to US markets and aims to foster economic growth, encourage good governance, and support open trade.

As the expiry date approaches, Ramaphosa is lobbying for the renewal of AGOA.

He also urged businesses and private investors at the SA–USA Trade and Investment Dialogue to support this call.

TACKLING US AND SA TRADE ISSUES

Ramaphosa made his call after the US imposed 30% reciprocal import tariffs on South Africa in August 2025.

He warned that the tariffs would hurt South Africa’s economy and also damage US businesses dependent on South African imports. Consequently, South Africa has engaged with the Trump administration to find a mutually beneficial solution.

In a closing interview during his US visit, Ramaphosa said he and Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau had a “great” briefing.

“South Africa has entered a phase of formal trade negotiations that will lead to a good end,” said Ramaphosa.

RAMAPHOSA’S CASE FOR THE RENEWAL OF AGOA

Ramaphosa is making the case that the renewal of AGOA will benefit both nations.

He highlighted South Africa’s role as a key trading partner while reinforcing trade stability and investment growth.
