Toastie war | Why the EGG is better than the whole CHICKEN
I know this might ruffle a few feathers (pun fully intended), but for me, egg mayo toasties reign supreme over chicken mayo any day of the week.

Much has been written about why one cannot find a chicken mayo toastie on a UK menu. Is it perhaps because they simply aren’t as delicious as their egg equivalent?
Balance of comfort and simplicity
But it’s not just about taste – it’s about texture, nostalgia, and that perfect balance of comfort and simplicity that only eggs can deliver.
First, there’s the texture. Egg mayo has this velvety, creamy consistency that seeps into the toasted bread just enough to make it rich without turning it soggy.
Every bite is smooth and balanced – the mayo binds the chopped egg into a luscious filling that’s soft, comforting, and oddly therapeutic.
Chicken mayo, on the other hand, often feels uneven – sometimes too chunky, sometimes too dry, and occasionally, the chicken dominates the flavour completely.
‘Effortlessly satisfying’
Then there’s flavour harmony. The beauty of egg mayo is that it doesn’t try too hard. It’s subtle, savoury, and effortlessly satisfying.
A sprinkle of salt, black pepper, and maybe a touch of paprika or chopped chives, and you’ve got a perfect balance of richness and freshness.
Chicken mayo toasties tend to need “extras” – mustard, lettuce, maybe even cheese – to make them interesting. Egg mayo just is interesting.
And I’ll admit, there’s a comfort factor. I grew up eating egg mayo sandwiches on lazy Sunday afternoons or as a quick snack before school.
There’s something deeply nostalgic about that soft, warm filling tucked between crisp, golden bread. It’s the kind of simplicity that tastes like home – humble, wholesome, and honest.
‘No fuss’
Finally, there’s the practical side. Egg mayo is faster, cheaper, and somehow feels lighter.
You boil a few eggs, mash them with mayo, and you’re done. No cooking chicken, no shredding, no fuss. Just pure, uncomplicated deliciousness.
So yes, while chicken mayo has its place (especially if you’re hungry enough to justify it), egg mayo toasties are in a league of their own – comforting, classic, and utterly reliable. They’re the culinary equivalent of a warm hug on a rainy day.
