Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe storms and a Yellow Level 2 warning for strong winds, with possible localised flooding, excessive lightning, damaging winds and hail over parts of South Africa.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to heavy downpours resulting in flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail and/or large hail over a populated area expected over the western interior of KwaZulu-Natal.

B. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges/areas, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail and/or large hail over a populated area expected in the extreme east of Northern Cape, Free State except in the north, western and central North West and over the central and western region of KwaZulu-Natal.

C. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Damaging Winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea and localised damage to temporary structures, are expected over the Cape Metropole, as well as between Lamberts Bay and Cape Agulhas.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the over Nama Khoi municipality of the Northern Cape and parts of the West Coast district.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect morning fog patches in the south-east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog patches over the escarpment and over the Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the east.

Free State

In Free State, partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the north.

Northern Cape

The day will start partly cloudy in the east with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered over the extreme east, otherwise fine and hot to very hot but warm over the north-western parts. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape

Fine and hot to very hot but cool to warm in the south. It will become partly cloudy along the south coast in the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly, becoming strong to near gale force along the south- west coast in the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Extreme

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated thunderstorms in the north. It will be fine in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly to easterly.

The Eastern half: The day will start partly cloudy and warm with isolated thundershowers but scattered over the north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly, turning easterly by evening.

KwaZulu-Natal

Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the west. The wind along the coast will be the wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north easterly, freshening in the extreme south.
