If you are a South African living abroad, you likely find yourself longing for the vibrant colours of home as the seasons change. There is something truly magical about watching our countryside transform into a vast sea of orange, yellow, and purple. Whether you are planning a trip back to South Africa or simply want to indulge in some floral nostalgia, knowing exactly when to visit these hotspots is the secret to catching them at their peak.

I have always believed that flowers are among the most beautiful things on earth, and having visited a local flower farm myself, I can say it is an amazing experience that is definitely worth your time.

Famous flower farms in South Africa and when to visit them

South Africa is home to world-renowned flower farms and conservation areas that offer once-in-a-lifetime displays. Here is where you should go and the specific times to catch the blooms:

  • Adene’s Farm Flowers (Wolseley, Western Cape): This farm is famous for its high-quality, long-lasting cut flowers. You can experience their “Pick Your Own” days from mid-December to the first week of April.
  • Tal Florals (Bloemfontein, Free State): A family-run farm specialising in roses, dahlias, and hydrangeas. Visit them between September and April for public flower picking and a coffee shop experience.
  • Akanaka Blooms (Meyerton, Gauteng): This spot features diverse seasonal flowers, with sunflowers being a major highlight. The best time to visit for these displays is during the summer months.
  • Nieuwoudtville Wildflower Reserve (Northern Cape): Known as the “bulb capital of the world,” this area boasts over 1,350 plant species. The most vibrant spring displays typically occur during August and September.
  • Biedouw Valley (Cederberg): This area is famous for dramatic, sweeping displays of wild flowers. You should plan your visit for late winter and early spring to see the valley in full color.
  • Weltevrede Flower Farm (Western Cape): This is a scenic destination known for its beautiful, curated floral landscapes. It is best visited during the spring months when the landscapes are at their most lush.
  • Matjiesfontein Farm (Nieuwoudtville): This is a key location for those wanting to see extensive, vibrant yellow flower fields. Catch these incredible views during the peak spring window of August and September.

Tips for your visit

Sunshine is essential: Many of these flowers only open their petals when the sun is out and it is warm enough.

Check the time: The best viewing hours are usually between 10:00 and 16:00 when the sun is highest.

Stay on the paths: To protect South Africa’s vision of a prosperous and beautiful nation, always respect the land and avoid trampling the displays.
