Former England international and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was the worst he’s ever experienced.

Rooney doesn’t think the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the US will be as boring as others think.

Furthermore, the US is deemed unsafe due to their ongoing joint-attacks on Iran alongside Israel.

This comes after a section of fans called for the boycott of the games due to high ticket costs coupled with security issues.

However, Rooney holds a different view, saying this global showpiece will not be as bad as the 2010 edition.

Rooney played in three different FIFA World Cup finals with England – 2006, 2010 and 2014 – before retiring.

ROONEY SAYS SOUTH AFRICA HOSTED THE WORST FIFA WORLD CUP

“It doesn’t get worse than South Africa,” said Rooney on The Overlap.

“That tournament never felt like a World Cup.

“We were travelling to the USA game, the first game. While we were driving to the game, it was pitch black, there’s no fans there.

“The way you normally go to welcome the fans, it was nothing. It just didn’t feel like a World Cup at all,” added Rooney.

SOUTH AFRICA MAKE RETURN AFTER 16-YEAR ABSENCE

Meanwhile, South Africa will make their return to the FIFA World Cup after being absent for 16 years.

The last time Bafana Bafana played in a World Cup was during 2010 on home soil where they became the first host nation to crash out in the group stages.

They are in Group A alongside Mexico and South Korea with the third opponent set to be determined later this month.
