For many South Africans in Canada, the simple act of renewing a passport has turned into an emotional and financial journey. What should be a routine administrative task now involves long flights, costly hotels, missed workdays, and careful childcare plans.

Across a vast country that spans almost 10 million square kilometres, South African expats feel unheard and overlooked.

The issue began when passport processing was outsourced to VFS Global, with only a handful of locations available in one province. This limited footprint must serve South Africans spread across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.

For the approximately 52000 South African expats building new lives abroad, the challenge feels both surreal and deeply “unfair”.

SOUTH AFRICANS IN CANADA FACE PASSPORT RENEWAL REALITY

Imagine travelling more than 2 000 kilometres just to submit documents. For many, that is the average distance to access a processing centre.

The journey also carries financial strain and emotional fatigue. They must book flights months ahead and beg employers for time off.

In short, their lives have to pause for paperwork.

To add insult to injury, the process often feels like a maze. Embassies redirect queries to consulates, and consulates, in turn, point them towards the Department of Home Affairs.

Citizens find themselves circling a system that offers few clear answers while passports expire, travel plans stall, and uncertainty grows.

Yet this growing frustration has sparked unity. A petition calling for reform has already gathered about 1 900 signatures from residents across 573 cities, spanning more than ten provinces and two territories – numbers that reveal a shared experience that crosses language, culture, and profession.

THE PETITION DEMANDS

This campaign is rooted in fairness, accessibility, and accountability.

South Africans abroad are adamant that they contribute to both their host country and their homeland. Surely they deserve a renewal system that reflects Canada’s geographic reality?

These South African expats speak of wanting connection, not complication. They just ask for a process that recognises distances while respecting their identity. Digital solutions, expanded service points, or rotating consular visits could transform their experience.

For now, the call continues, and South Africans in Canada stand together, asking for a passport renewal system that honours their journey and values their time.

SA People has sent questions to the Department of Home Affairs. A response will be published once received.
