OUAGADOUGOU – Troops loyal to the Burkina Faso government have apparently told members of a coup led by former general Gilbert Diendere to stand down or face attack, according to news reports.
The country is meant to elect a new leader on 11 October, almost a year after Blaise Compaore, who had led the country for 27 years, was removed during a popular uprising. Diendere apparently led the coup in support of Compaore.
Leaders in the West Africa region gathered over the weekend to try and solve the crisis and announced a draft agreement, but the Tuesday deadline was not met by the coup leaders, according to Twitter. Large crowds of people gathered in towns throughout the country in support of the rebels standing down, the reports said.
