I have been a professional wildlife photographer for 30-plus years, but never before have I seen eight adult cheetahs in one group… writes Daryl Balfour.
A mother and six tiny cubs, yes, (and that was with the selfsame Malaika in these pictures)… but eight big cheetahs… never.
I came upon this scene with my guest whilst on a private Big Cat Safari in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Park on Saturday, and the interactions that ensued as five of the males attempted to woo and seduce a reluctant Malaika kept us enthralled for well over six hours.
The other two males were her sons, who showed an interested concern for mom but did not try to intervene.
It’s pretty certain that Malaika is coming into oestrus and will mate with one of these big boys once she begins ovulating properly, but whoever gets the prize will have to show his courage and determination first.
There are bound to be many slaps before that finally takes place.
