Applications for the 2024 National Student Financial Aid Scheme close tomorrow (Thursday 15 February 2024). In indomitable government-agency fashion, the scheme for disadvantaged students has been nothing but farcical so far this year.

The Minister of Higher Education, Professor Blade Nzimande, has been embroiled in a corruption scandal already this year. And the NSFAS Board Chairperson, Ernest Khosa, took a leave of absence till investigations are resolved. The SIU has also recovered R737 million is mismanaged funds. No wonder 2024 applications seem like they’re on the back-burner.
