In a chairman’s letter published to Remgro shareholders, Johann Rupert, SA’s richest man shares words of wisdom up about the future of the country. The great man recently gave away 10 000 homes to the underprivileged. These excerpts were first published on Daily Investor .

2024 is an important election year for South Africa, poised on the brink of change. Nevertheless, Johann Rupert wrote in his Remgro chairman’s letter to shareholders that not just South Africa, but the world is experiencing a ‘globally turbulent period’.

SA’S RICHEST MAN SHARES HIS WISDOM

Continuing on, SA’s richest man shares: “The current economic environment is troubling. The disruption in business operations directly impacts consumers and runs the risk of increased social instability due to the undoing of livelihoods and rise in poverty levels.”

For 2024 and beyond, Rupert is concerned about the continued breakdown of state infrastructure. Specifically, relating to energy, transport, logistics, and the slow pace of economic reforms, and the low levels of expected economic growth as a result.

SA’s richest man shares further warnings of elevated loadshedding, high inflation, exchange rate volatility, logistics inefficiencies, geopolitical tensions, and crime and corruption. “All of these features, compounded together, have created what is the most difficult business environments to operate in since Remgro’s inception,” Rupert said.

However, like any major company in South Africa, Remgro said it would not face these challenges lying down. “We are not going to sit on the sidelines. These are big challenges, but these challenges can be solved,” said Remgro CFO, Neville Williams.

SA’s richest man said, “Remgro has always faced uncertainty and relentless challenges, and while it is a difficult environment, we are doing everything we can to grow the economy. The long-term success of Remgro and any business lies in its ability to adapt and seize the opportunities that present themselves in an ever-changing environment,” concluded Rupert.
