Following last week’s South African Social Security Agency disbursements, we look ahead to June 2024 SASSA old-age pension grants, including payment dates, amounts and how to apply. However, before that, it’s worth noting changes the agency is bringing to reduce financial wastage.

The Department of Social Development is going high-tech with SASSA facial recognition software. The reason for this is to better eliminate irregular payments of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. The hope is that facial recognition through smartphones will stop digital fraudsters from taking grants away from the needy.

EXCLUSIONS AFTER REVIEW

Making ends meet is getting harder for South Africa’s old-age population. Here’s how how you can get government support financially. Image: File/Fotor

The agency reminds recipients that grants will automatically lapse if you pass away. If you move and no longer live permanently in South Africa. Also, if your health deteriorates and you have to move into a state care institution. Similarly, you are not allowed to receive more than one SASSA grant at a time, therefore you cannot receive War Veterans, Child Support, SRD R350 Grant, Disability or any of the others simultaneously.

Moreover, the agency says the most common reasons for exclusion after a review is if you no longer comply with the asset and means tests. SASSA must alert you in writing three-month before your grant is reviewed. This is so you have enough time to get your personal finances in order to prove your means.
