Celebrated music executive and record label owner Arthur Mafokate has dumped his bid to challenge the Special Investigating Unity from freezing his assets, which were allegedly bought from proceeds of money laundering.

Mafokate had his latest court sitting at the Johannesburg High Court on 30 October, where he was expected to defend the permanent forfeiture of his lush estate, La Villa, in Midrand.

During the court sitting, he pulled a shocker when he revealed that he was withdrawing his motion to defend an application filed by the director of public prosecution to enforce an order to freeze the guesthouse.

No doubt this left the gallery confused and trying to connect the dots if it was a strategy or he was admitting to being guilty. The SIU froze Arthur Mafokate’s R7.5 million guesthouse after obtaining an order in 2022.

The two units were also given the nod to freeze three of his pricey properties, which included a plot and a portion of a farm. It is alleged that the properties were bought from the proceeds of the lotteries’ grand fund, the National Lotteries Commission.

Reports have it that he allegedly purchased his lush guesthouse with money from the NLC, which was meant for the musician’s non-profit organisation, SA Arts and Development Association (SAADA).

Against the allegations, he has often rubbished the claims, and in his defence filed before the courts in April, Mafokate revealed that he did receive funds from the NLC, noting that they were obtained legally.

In a now-viral YouTube podcast, Mafokate denied any wrongdoing. The muso allegedly received over R9 million from the NLC through SAADA to roll out development projects for underprivileged youths and marginalised communities.
