At least seven people have tragically died after a fire swept through a building in central Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday morning.

One person died when they desperately tried to jump to safety to escape the fire. The other six perished in the flames.

The cause of the fire at the Cape York building, on the corner of Jeppe and Nugget Streets, is not yet known. The dilapidated building is one of the “hijacked” buildings in Joburg, and has been badly damaged according to the City of Joburg EMS (Emergency Medical Services).

The City said: “Over 50 people have been rescued from the roof of the building using the Bronto Skylift, and five were rushed to hospital.”

EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe confirmed seven people have died, and said several other people have been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

There are reportedly still some people inside the building, although police and EMS have asked them to leave.
