In an email to participants, Race Director John Swanepoel explained that Prince Albert and surrounding area experienced a massive flash flood on Sunday night between 18h00 and 20h30.

He said the town’s water supply has been affected and houses have been flooded.

“Sadly the Swartberg Pass, a national monument, has been severely damaged, it is impassable and will remain so for many months while repair work is done. Further to this Meiringspoort has also been closed to traffic for the time being.”

Swanepoel announced the cancellation of the annual Autumn race with “great sadness”, and encouraged participants to still visit “wonderful” Prince Albert and spend the long weekend in the accommodation they have booked. A special ride through farmlands will be organised for Saturday 29 April. More info on the website or swartberg100@mtbafrica.co.za

Meiringspoort has re-opened in the area, but the Swartberg Pass remains closed to traffic. There is access to Gamkaskloof from the Oudtshoorn side of the Swartberg Pass.
