COURT APPEARANCE AND CHARGES

Devon Hofmeyr, Willem Petzer, and Tewie Wessels appeared in court on Monday in Groblersdal, Limpopo, on charges of public violence. The fourth accused, Dries Olivier, could not attend due to illness, according to Maroela Media.

The charges emerged from an event in January where all four of the accused were involved in a protest outside the courtroom in Groblersdal. They were involved in conflict with the police.

Bail was denied and the application was postponed until Thursday as the addresses of the accused could not yet be verified by the prosecutor. Devon, Willem and Tewie will be in custody until Thursday, according to Die Waarheid. All three handed in statements in support of their bail applications.

STEVE HOFMEYR’S SON A DIRECTOR OF BITTEREINDERS

Devon is a director and the leader of the movement Bittereinders. The name could be loosely translated to “never say die”. The movement’s aim is to work towards a better future for everyone in South Africa. One of their priorities is putting an end to farm murders.

Devon confronted the police minister Bheki Cele in October last year regarding putting plans in action to address farm murders and crime, especially in the North West. Black and white residents cheered as Devon Hofmeyr told Cele that the Brits community is fed up with farm murders and fearing for their lives as crime continues to plague the town, according to The Citizen.

Steve Hofmeyr took to social media to ask people to contribute financially to the legal fees of his son Devon. He thanked supporters and said that he prayed that the court would approve bail on Thursday. In his post, he mentioned that legal fees can reach exorbitant amounts and implied that the lack of finances often leads to the accused who are innocent, to not getting quality legal representation.
