A South African Police Services (SAPS) officer in full uniform, caught drunk on duty after a video went viral, appeared in court this week where he had his bail extended until January 2021.
The shocking video (watch below) filmed on Sunday, showed the SA police officer, behind the wheel of a patrol car, so drunk that he has to be held up when he finally gets out the driver’s door.
The footage of the cop went viral on WhatsApp after he was caught red-handed with a stash of alcohol on the passenger seat, after reversing into a farmer’s fence. Angry villagers at Extension 10, Tswelelang Location in Wolmaransstad in the North West province confronted the police officer and asked him to get out the police station wagon and look at the damage he caused.
But what happened next, the gathering crowd did not expect… as the constable then toppled forwards into the arms of a villager and had to be held up to stop him collapsing.
The officer on the video is clearly incoherent and unsteady on his feet and it is quickly realised that he is extremely drunk on duty – and in uniform and driving a police patrol car.
A quick-thinking woman can be seen dashing in behind the constable as he tries to make a joke of his drunken predicament and snatches the keys from the ignition to strand him. Others can be seen in the background going through a shopping bag on the passenger seat of the patrol car, and finding it full of bottles of alcohol… but then the officer spots them.
He gets back in the car and wrestles his stash of drink back from the villagers and scolds them. Bottles can be heard clinking as he puts the bag by his feet in the footwell. But then as he prepares to make a getaway his face turns grim as he realises his keys have been taken – and is told that fellow police officers are on their way to the scene.
South African Police Service spokesman Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said: “The police management is appalled by the unprofessional and unbecoming conduct of a constable.
“He is stationed at Wolmaransstad SAPS in Dr Kenneth Kaunda district and a preliminary investigation revealed the officer is not authorised to drive state motor vehicles.
“The constable has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless or negligent driving, and the use of a state vehicle without the owners’ consent,” he said.
The officer appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates Court on Monday. Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone told SAPeople: “His bail of R500 has been extended until 26th Jan 2021 when he will have to appear again.
A SAPS source said:”The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele hates alcohol with a vengeance and if it was up to him it would be outlawed in South Africa so this video will totally infuriate him. Seeing one of his officers in this condition due to alcohol will send him off the scale.”
In the year 2018/19 there were 82,000 drink driving arrests in South Africa and 1 million road accidents with 40 people a day killed – 58% of those fatalities involved alcohol.
Police said a departmental investigation will also be instituted against the member in terms of SAPS Discipline Regulations.
