Well known South African pilot and author, Megan Werner, has revealed that she was shot by an intruder on Friday (6 October 2023).

Speaking from ICU, Megan said in a video message that she had been robbed at home while entertaining friends, and had been shot in the leg.

In her TikTok video caption, Megan said: “I can only thank the Father above for keeping us safe” and hashtagged #farmmurdersinsa #southafrica #crime and other tags.

Megan, who made headlines in 2019 when she flew a plane from Cape Town to Cairo, said in the video:

Ja no kyk, dis lekker in die land van Suid Afrika. So basically we got robbed (on Friday) night…”

She explained she was having a braai with some friends when “next moment, four guys come running in, and shooting everywhere. Luckily only I got shot, and none of my friends got hurt.”

She said she got a “lekker one” in the leg, and admitted “it was rather painful”. Just out of surgery when she filmed the video message, Megan said they had stitched up the main artery and muscles that got shot, and that she was due to remain in ICU until today (Monday).

Messages have streamed in from friends and fans of the popular pilot, wishing her a full and swift recovery, and being grateful that she survived the attack.

“To think we can’t even enjoy an evening with friends. We are prisoners in our own homes. So sad. Hope you recover soon,” said one South African. Megan replied: “It is honestly so sad 😭 Thank you 😊”

Many congratulated Megan on her brilliant attitude, although someone pointed out that her casual way of talking about being shot “tells me you’re South African without telling me”. Some shared their own horror stories – a husband stabbed two weeks ago, a kidnapping…

“And this is why I am glad to be gone,” said one SA expat. “Sorry you had to go through this kak.”

Another pointed out: “Physical wounds heal; it’s the psychological scars that are tough to get over.” Megan agreed. “Facts that👆” she wrote.

And in response to somebody who asked “like why aren’t we even safe in our own homes?”, Megan said: “It’s messed up… and the cops won’t even catch them🤦🏼‍♀️”

Megan has inspired South Africans for years, since the then-teenager from Krugersdorp founded U Dream Global to help transform the lives of thousands of youth throughout Africa and the world by dreaming and achieving the impossible.

Megan and a group of 20 teens built a four-seater plane in three weeks from a kit. Megan then flew it to Cairo stopping in various countries on the way to give motivational talks.

She now has a large following on TikTok where she’s known as Megan The Pilot.
