AFRIKAANS SLANG EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

Here are some slang words and expressions in Afrikaans that you should know if you want to have a lekker time in South Africa.

Slap chips/tjips

This is the Afrikaans name for hot chips or fries. Unlike “hot chips”, slap tjips is far more descriptive of the type of fries that you will get at a fish and chips outlet. Think oily potato chips drenched in vinegar, with lots of salt, and thick and limp (slap).

Lekker

The closest direct English translation of lekker, is “nice”. However, the word lekker says so much more than “nice”. Internationally-known comedian, Schalk Bezuidenhout gives a description of this Afrikaans word in one of his videos on Instagram aimed at his non-Afrikaans fans. The Oxford English Dictionary has included the word lekker as an accepted South African English word. Other SA English words included in the Oxford English Dictionary are skedonkeinadeurmekaar, and voetstoots.

Skollie

South Africans use the word skollie to refer to someone who has bad intentions, a gangster, a rascal, or a hooligan. Noem My Skollie, a South African movie based on a true story, is about a young man in jail and his interactions with the prison gangs. The movie received worldwide claim and was translated to Call Me Thief.

Bliksem

Bliksem refers to lightning. However, people use it more often as an insult to someone, e.g. Daardie ou is ‘n bliksem, or to indicate intense anger, e.g. Ek is die bliksem in vir hom. It is also used as an exclamation expressive of surprise or shock, e.g. Bliksem, dis warm vandag.
