The policeman in the photo is Constable Masibi from Coligny who was on patrol when he drove past three older people. He noticed that the Ouma was battling to walk (“baie sukkel om te loop”), so he turned around and picked them up.

According to Fanus (who witnessed the charitable act along with his children), Constable Masibi then drove them four blocks further to their house to drop them off.

Dit in SA??? Wel, ek sou ook nie glo nie. Maar het dit self gesien,” said Fanus. (“This in SA? Well, I also wouldn’t have believed it. But I saw it with my own eyes.”)

Hundreds of people have shared the post, and hoped that Constable Masibi would see their messages thanking him for having a heart and being such a great example.

Fanus says he did show Masibi the messages, and the constable was blown away by the kind comments. Fanus had to point out that actually it was he, Masibi, who had been the kind one.

Hy is baie nederig en trots op sy werk,” says Fanus. (“He is very humble and proud of his work.”)

At this point, we must point out that Fanus is also a wonderfully kind and humble human! This morning he went around to the Ouma’s house on behalf of SAPeople to find out some more info.

“The lady’s name is Magdalena Dysel. She is 90-years-old,” he told SAPeople. She was on her way home from the shop, walking the 2.6 km stretch in temperatures of around 34 degrees.

This weekend South African writer Gus Silber suggested on Facebook that there “should be awards for the small things too, for the little gestures that make a positive and meaningful difference in everyday life.”

We couldn’t agree more! Constable Masibi should be the first recipient! And then Fanus Schutte for sharing some good news with the rest of us…
