South African expat Chanel Simmonds, who now lives in the USA, has won one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the US. Chanel was crowned women’s single champion at the 121st Ojai Tennis Tournament in California on Sunday (30 April).

Chanel – who lives in Redmond in Washington – said on Instagram: “Enjoyed every moment competing at The Ojai ? special event with my special person @grantwilliamcockrell ?” (Chanel and Grant were married in a beautiful ceremony last year.)

Top-seeded Chanel won the final against Leyden Games 6-1, 6-2. Chanel is in great company. Previous winners of the Ojai Tournament include Billie Jean King, Lindsay Davenport, Arthur Ashe and Pete Sampras who then went on to win majors, according to the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.

The Ojai Tennis Tournament is one of the oldest tournaments in the United States, having begun in 1896. Ojai legend Tracy Austin, who became the youngest player to ever win the US Open at just 16, was at the tournament as an Honoree along with a few other special guests.
