Franklin, who had pancreatic cancer, was surrounded by her family and friends in Detroit.

Noah recalled growing up in South Africa listening to Franklin with his mom, and how he was so young he didn’t even realise what he was singing when he’d belt out “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Women”.

Noah said Franklin was a trailblazer who refused to play for segregated audiences, and always insisted on being paid in cash before she would begin performing.

South Africa’s Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa also expressed sadness at the passing away of the legendary American singer and songwriter.

“Her voice regenerated our hearts with hope of a brighter day like the sunrise, yet it still produced the calming effects of a sunset. But even the sun shall never set on her legacy,” the Minister tweeted.
