Kudos must go to the Western Cape government yet again for offering free public transport to the unemployed. Otherwise known as Getting YOU to Work, the initiative offers free public transport to jobseekers on the province’s Golden Arrow Bus Service, reports TopAuto.

That’s correct, free public transport is on offer in the Western Cape for interviewees with registered employers, between 08h00 and 16h00 on weekdays, for 12 trips. As you can see, it’s not for layabouts who want a free ride to town. This is strictly for jobseekers hoping to better their circumstances. And not having bus fare for the interview is no longer an excuse.

The free public transport initiative is part of the Western Cape’s Growth 4 Jobs Strategy. Premier Alan Winde is doing everything he can to tackle unemployment which currently stands at 20% in the province. Even though that’s half of what it is on average in the rest of the country, this initiative provides tangible support to many who are actively looking for work but find it hard to cover the cost of transport.

  • Once accepted, the jobseeker enters his/her details via an online platform.
  • They then receive an SMS with details and further instructions.
  • Your 12 free trips are then loaded onto the system.
  • These can be collected in the form of a gold card at any Golden Arrow Bus Service kiosk.
