Despite only featuring nine times this season, the former Zimbabwe international has statistically still been one of the best performers for Chiefs this season. Billiat has not kicked a ball in 2023 but is still Chiefs’ joint top assist maker along side Keagan Dolly with just four assists. That in itself highlighting how desperate the need is for the Glamour Boys to add a playmaker to their ranks.

On the other side, it has probably been the reason why Chiefs seem to have, at least in recent weeks, made a U-turn on what was thought to be a clean break for both parties. Since Billiat started training on the pitch again, the club is thought to have been more positive about his future, and really started exploring a scenario where both parties reach a compromise in order to move forward.

In the last weeks, it was reported by this publication that Billiat has been told by Chiefs that he can stay at the club, provided he takes a pay cut. In the same week, a further report came out saying that the club and player were talking about a one-year extension to his contract at the club. The narrative of the tricky forward staying at the Soweto giants seems to now be the more dominant with a further report last week stating, the player is thought to already have an existing one-year contract extension option on his original deal with the club.

However, nothing seems to be agreed or signed in that respect between Chiefs and Billiat, and they’re negotiations could yet be disrupted. This is because, FarPost are reporting that Tanzanian giants Yanga are monitoring the situation between the two parties. Their president Hersi Ally also confirmed the interest.

YANGA INTEREST CONFIRMED

“If you ask me, he’s one of my favourite players. The type of quality he has is out of this world. So, why not, if we (Yanga) can get a chance of having him?” Ally said.

His comments come after vice president Arafat Haji also confirmed to Isolezwe that they would be interested in signing Billiat from Chiefs.

MORE CONFIRMATION ON BILLIAT INTEREST

“He is a high-level player that we would like to have in our team, We know him, and we know that his contract is ending. However, he is still a Chiefs player. We must respect that. We will discuss the signing of players and plans for next season after the season is over.” Said Haji.

It remans to be seen if Chiefs and Billiat will eventually reach an agreement or he will end up elsewhere, giving newly crowned Tanzanian giants Yanga an opportunity to sign him up.
