After eight months of uncertainty created by the African National Congress’s “unlawful” battle to take control of Tshwane, the city is back under the control of the Democratic Alliance, who today elected as mayor Randall Williams.

Three days ago the Supreme Court ruled that the DA could retake control of Tshwane and remove the “unlawful” ANC administrators.

In welcoming the long-awaited judgment, DA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson Mike Moriarty said it was obvious from the court judgement that the ANC’s action to put Tshwane under administration eight months ago was a “politically motivated power grab on the part of Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile”.

“Tshwane has suffered months of governance paralysis due to the ANC having continuously rendered the council ungovernable,” the DA said today. For eight months the city went “down a path of regression and deterioration as services have stagnated. From ongoing power failures, water outages, and refuse removal coming to a complete standstill – service delivery has completely declined under the ANC-administration.”

Williams beat Tshwane regional chairperson Moafrika Mabogwane of the EFF, the only other contender. Williams got 97 votes, Mobogwane 25. The ANC did not vote.

The DA said Williams’ focus now was to fix and perfect basic and essential service delivery, and lay down the foundations of a strong and capable administration to best serve and provide for the city and its residents. This included:

  • Fixing streetlights;
  • Fixing potholes and painting road markings;
  • Making sure people have access to water, especially in Hammanskraal; and
  • Cleaning up the City.

“This is the DA’s promise to the people of Tshwane. When we get the basics right, businesses thrive, communities become safer, and residents have a better quality of life.”
