For the last few days, the Fourways Farmers Market has been trending after a video of ama2000s grooving there went viral. In the clip, a large group of young revelers can be seen drinking and dancing as loud music blares in the background. The establishment has since released a statement stating that it will be reviewing its entertainment offerings to ensure that the market remains family-friendly.

The statement has been widely circulated as South African social media users debate whether or not it is racist. Even media personality Anele Mdoda had her say in the heated discussion.

A TikTok video of a group of young people grooving at the market has gone viral as locals criticised those who go there to party and the establishment for allowing it.

“The initial spirit of Fourways Farmers Market has just changed. I liked it better without the sectioning where it’s all nice and safe for the whole family. But people wanna turn it into a serious groove. Markets are about chill,” wrote one person after seeing the clip.

This prompted the market to share a statement saying that they would be reviewing their entertainment offerings.

Responding to the statement, one person remarked that it sounded “racist”. This sparked a number of responses from peeps who either agreed or disagreed.

Media personality Anele Mdoda wrote:

“I don’t think it’s racist… think about the family-friendly grass stands at the cricket. You used to be able to act the fool there… smoke drink and they realised that parents don’t want to bring their kids anymore. You can’t turn up at Papachinnos.”
