Another rapist, Athini Nothi Mzingelwa, who escaped from a prison in the Eastern Cape on Freedom Day, 27 April, has been rearrested.

SECOND RAPIST REARRESTED FOLLOWING PRISON BREAK IN EASTERN CAPE

On Wednesday, 3 May, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed Athini Nothi Mzingelwa was rearrested following his escape from the Nqeleni Correctional Centre along with Siyabulela Khohliso.

Mzingelwa was nabbed near Mthatha General Hospital at approximately 11:00. Kholiso was recaptured in Libode on Sunday.

“The offender is back in the care of Correctional Services and will join Siyabulela Khohliso as they are to face a new criminal charge for escaping from lawful custody,” said DCS.

Makgothi Thobakgale, the National DCS Commissioner, thanked community members for their assistance during the manhunt as they provided useful leads.

As previously reported, Mzingelwa was serving eight years for rape, while Khohliso was doing a 10-year bid for the same offence.

The pair slipped out of the Nqeleni Correctional Centre via the sports field at approximately 15:30 on Freedom Day.
