Tatjana Schoenmaker won South Africa’s first medal of the 2023 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Tuesday.
Swimming out of Lane 3 in the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke, Schoenmaker finished second in a time of 1:05.84.
Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte (1:04:62) won the gold medal, with the United States’ Lydia Jacoby in third (1:05:94).
Llilly King’s world record remains at 1:04.13 which she set at the 2017 world championships in Budapest.
Tatjana Schoenmaker will also compete in the women’s 200m breaststroke from Thursday, 27 July.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s second entrant in the women’s 100m breaststroke, Lara van Niekerk, failed to progress out of the heats after she posted the 18th fastest time (1:07.03).
