Around 50 homes were destroyed in Dube Village in Inanda north of Durban. Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and EThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, paid a visit to the disaster area to assess the extent of the damage and learn more as to how to assist affected families.

Kubayi, who is in the province to unveil a completed housing in Isipingo says, they are yet to know the full extent of the damage and costs involved.

By Wednesday morning Kubayi says there were around 150 families that had registered their homes as destroyed or damaged. Residents with partially damaged homes will recieve a voucher for building materials.

INANDA RESIDENTS DUCK THE ELEMENTS AND SEEK SHELTER IN HALL

Amaoti Community Hall has been opened up for people requiring shelter. Already there have been 36 people who have sought shelter at the hall.

“Only 36 people slept in the hall, we need to establish whether the people that are here do not have a roof over their heads. If their houses are completely damaged then alternative accommodation for them” Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

“However it will start with temporary accommodation then permanent accommodation.”

The minister has urged residents to build in areas that are not fit for human settlements.
