The City of Cape Town is dedicated to the well-being of its residents and employees, so in line with this commitment, the City’s Health Department is getting ready to celebrate National Nutrition Week from 9 to 16 October 2023. 

Critical link between productivity and overall well-being

The City’s Health Dept. recognises the critical link between nutrition, productivity, and overall well-being in the workplace. According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, studies have shown that employees with unhealthy diets are 66% more likely to experience lower productivity, while those who rarely exercise face a 50% increased risk of lower productivity.

Making healthier food choices

Smoking further compounds the issue, with smokers facing a 28% higher risk of reduced productivity. Moreover, conditions such as depression, excess body weight, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels also elevate the risk of lost productivity.

In addition to healthy eating which is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, it also plays a pivotal role in addressing the challenges posed by low productivity.

At the workplace, making healthier food choices is also vital, while a healthy eating plan involves a balanced mix of foods from various groups, with portion sizes tailored to meet individual nutrient and energy needs.

Employees should be encouraged make mindful food choices

Your options should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free/low-fat dairy products while minimising the intake of saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and salt.

Employees are to make mindful food choices aligned with the guidelines for healthy eating and to be cautious about portion sizes. The City is dedicated to fostering a healthy, productive, and vibrant workforce.
