Though Gauteng is South Africa’s smallest province, it is also the country’s most populated.

OUTDOORS IN JOHANNESBURG:

JOHANNESBURG BOTANICAL GARDENS

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, in Emmarentia, is a haven for nature lovers.

Sprawling over 81 hectares, it features various gardens, including a rose garden with over 4 500 roses, a herb garden, and a succulent garden.

Emmarentia Dam is perfect for picnics, canoeing, and bird watching, making it an ideal spot for family outings.

DELTA PARK

This is one of Joburg’s biggest parks, spanning almost 104 hectares.

It’s known for its grasslands, scenic dams, and Delta Environmental Centre, which offers environmental education and awareness programs.

The park is a popular spot for bird watchers, with over 200 bird species identified.

THE WILDS

This small nature reserve located in Houghton, is a hidden gem. 

The Wilds offers some well-maintained walking paths, through indigenous vegetation.

The park is home to sculptures and boasts impressive views of Johannesburg, making it a unique blend of art, nature, and urban energy.

MELVILLE KOPPIES

This green space is both a heritage site and nature reserve. It is set in the midst of Johannesburg’s urban sprawl.

This reserve offers a glimpse into the region’s ecological history, with indigenous flora and fauna, and archaeological sites dating back to the Stone Age.

MODDERFONTEIN RESERVE

This green space, located in Joburg’s eastern suburbs, is a large conservation area where visitors can experience a range of activities, including hiking, bird watching, and mountain biking.

The reserve is home to various wildlife species.

GILLOOLY’S FARM

Gillooly’s Farm is a picturesque place to escape, with its large lake and lush surroundings.

This green space is a popular spot for family picnics, dog walking, and jogging.

The farm also hosts various events, including farmers’ markets and outdoor concerts, mixing leisure with natural beauty.

KLIPRIVIERSBERG NATURE RESERVE

Known as the “Jewel of the South,” this green space is the largest nature reserve situated in the south of Johannesburg.

Sprawling over 680 hectares, it features historical sites, archaeological findings, and diverse flora and fauna.

Klipriviersberg has several hiking trails, allowing visitors to explore the grasslands and spot wildlife such as zebra, blesbok, and over 200 bird species.

WALTER SISULU NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

This green space is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Named after the anti-apartheid activist Walter Sisulu, the space is famous for its waterfall and an eagle nesting site.

With its rich biodiversity, the botanical garden is home to over 600 plant species and wildlife, offering a blend of conservation and recreation.
