South African Airways (SAA) will offer daily scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Gqeberha from next month.

SA’s national carrier will start flying to Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth) on 13 December.

The airline currently flies between 3 destinations in South Africa: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS

The airline has been operating scheduled flights for just over two years since emerging from business rescue in late 2021.

At first, the airline flew only between Johannesburg and Cape Town. It then added Durban back into its flight route network in early 2022.

GQEBERHA FLIGHTS

Now it will also offer Gqeberha services. These flights will restart next month but will be operated as a seasonal service.

According to Travel News, flights between Johannesburg and Gqeberha will operate from mid-December until the end of March next year.

The airline says it will offer two flights a day on this route. Flights will be operated daily, commencing Wednesday 13 December until Saturday 31 March 2024.

BUILDING BACK

South African Airways has temporarily leased two additional aircraft, enabling it to scale up its route network and flight schedules for the summer.

The airline has recently begun to operate intercontinental routes again, with the launch of scheduled flights between South Africa and Brazil.

SAA now flies to Sao Paulo (in Brazil) from two destinations in South Africa: Johannesburg and Cape Town.

DESTINATIONS SUSPENDED

While South African Airways resumes domestic flights to Gqeberha, it will be halting flights to two destinations in its regional route network.

The airline will suspend flights to both Blantyre and Lilongwe in Malawi at the end of this month. The move comes as a result of the economic situation in that country.
