With the festive season fast approaching, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is urging all motorists to renew their motor vehicle licence discs before setting off on year-end travels.

The reminder comes as over 3.1 million vehicle licence discs are set to expire in the final three months of 2025:

  • October: 1 002 771 discs
  • November: 1 060 382 discs
  • December: 1 112 393 discs

That’s a total of 3 175 546 discs due for renewal before New Year’s Eve. With SAPS likely to be out in full force on 31 December, here’s another reminder not to drink and drive – and to ensure your vehicle’s licence is valid.

Online Renewal Platform Gaining Momentum

To help streamline the process, the RTMC is encouraging vehicle owners to use the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) online platform at online.natis.gov.za, where users can register and renew licence discs digitally.

Since its launch in 2022, the platform has become increasingly popular:

  • Over 5 million renewals have been processed to date
  • An average of 7 908 renewals per day were recorded over the past week
  • Users of Capitec, FNB, and Nedbank can access the service via their banking apps

RTMC has confirmed that SMS and email reminders will be sent to all motorists registered on the platform, alerting them ahead of expiry dates.

The platform has expanded its capabilities to include:

  • AARTO fine payments: Users can now pay Enforcement Orders directly online
  • Change of ownership and vehicle registrations: Particularly useful for motor dealers handling high transaction volumes

From April to October 2025, the platform processed:

  • 120 230 change of ownership transactions
  • 78 239 vehicle registrations

In addition, more than 10 major dealerships are now using the system daily.

Plan Ahead and Avoid Penalties

The RTMC has reiterated the importance of renewing licences early to avoid penalties, delays, and potential travel disruptions during the festive season.

With the platform offering a safe, efficient way to comply, motorists are urged to make use of it in the coming weeks.
