Kwanda Mokoena impresses at GT Winter Series debut

Kwanda Mokoena made an impressive debut to the GT Winter series, bagging a double podium win in a HRT Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Kwanda Mokoena made a dream start to the GT Winter Series this past weekend in Valencia, Spain. In his first appearance, Mokoena finished in third place in Race 1 and second place in Race 3

Mokoena races for Haupt Racing Team (HRT) and had his first competitive outing in the Mercedes-AMG GT3.

“That was a bit of a tricky race!” the 19-year-old said as he celebrated a stunning debut podium according to Motorsport SA. “I felt like we had the pace, we just have a little fine tuning to do with the car, but overall I have to be super-happy. A podium in our first race, I couldn’t ask for more!”

Kwando Mokoena drove superbly in qualifying to place his Mercedes-AMG GT3 in third for Race 1. The Kyalami-born youngster followed it up with an impressive drive in qualifying for Race 2 to start in P2.

Recounting his performance over the weekend, Mokoena said on his vlog: “Overall, I think it was a super good weekend.”

“The team was also super happy, I guess I can’t really ask for anything better.”

Mokoena’s next race is in Barcelona in three weeks time on 9 and 10 March for the sixth round of the GT Winter Series.

Kwanda Mokoena made his way through the ranks at Volkswagen Motorsport in the Polo Cup. He graduated to the South African Endurance Championship and walked away with the title in 2022.

In 2023 the South African raced for the German outfit LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler Motorsport in an Audi R8 GT3.
