AKA murder: Shooters walked up and fired before fleeing on foot

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the double murder of two men – aged 34 and 35 – who were shot and killed in Florida Road, Morningside in Durban on Friday.

AKA SHOT AND KILLED

Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the incident took place after 22:00 on Friday.

It has been confirmed that South African rap star Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes was one of the victims. The other was Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, a well known author, chef and good friend of AKA, who was his former manager.

“Information at police’s disposal at this stage indicates that the men were walking towards their vehicle from a restaurant when they were allegedly approached by two armed suspects who walked to them from across the street and shot the victims at close range. The suspects are reported to have fled from the scene on foot,” said Neshiunda.

Both victims were declared dead at the scene, and the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.

The police are appealing to members of the public who may have information about the incident to get in touch with their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop hotline at 08600-10111.

FAMILY STATEMENT

AKA’s parents, Lynn and Tony Forbes confirmed his death on Saturday morning. They said he was loved and gave love in return.

“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of 10 February 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban police.

“To us, Kieran Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother , grandson, nephew, cousin and friend and most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kaito. To many he was AKA, SUPERMEGA, BHOVA and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by.

“Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days.

“We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord,” said AKA’s family in a statement.
