Cape Town to carry out 11-hour water shutdown in selected areas

The City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation directorate will shut off the water supply for 11 hours starting Tuesday, 27 May, to carry out planned maintenance.

The first planned maintenance is scheduled from 9:00 until 20:00 on Tuesday, 27 May in Strand.

CAPE TOWN CONFIRMS 11-HOUR WATER SHUTDOWN

The City of Cape Town said planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:

The municipality will temporarily shut off the water supply to parts of Wynberg from 8:00 to 19:00 on both Tuesday, 27 May, and Wednesday, 28 May.

“This will enable the maintenance team to safely connect the newly installed water pipeline along Bayview Road, Wynberg at the intersections with Wellington Road, Orient Road, Crescent Road, Prospect Hill Road, Seaview Road and Fairview Road to the existing water supply infrastructure. The area bounded by Bower Road, Wellington Avenue, Bayview Road, Silverlea Road and possibly the immediate surrounding streets will experience no water during this period on both days,” the City of Cape Town said.

Driftands, Mfuleni and Site B – Khayelitsha – The water supply to these areas will also be temporarily shut off from 9:00 until 20:00 on Thursday, 29 May to will enable the maintenance team to safely connect a 300mm diameter water meter on the water supply main in Mfuleni.

The City of Cape Town said residents will experience low water pressure to no water during this period. However, water tankers will be made available to provide water for domestic use where required.

ESSENTIAL SHUTDOWN OF TREATMENT PLANTS ONGOING

In addition to the water shutdowns in the above-mentioned areas, the Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will be shut down from 00:00 on Tuesday, 27 May 2025 until 24:00 on Wednesday, 28 May to allow the maintenance team to do essential maintenance during this period.

Consumers in Kraaifontein, Bloekombos and Wallacedene have been requested to reduce their water consumption during this period.

“The City’s reservoirs in the northern areas will be filled in advance. The Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Municipalities as well as  private consumers along the Wemmershoek pipeline have been informed to make the necessary preparations.  Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply,” the metro municipality said.
