CapeNature launches South Africa’s first slow overnight hiking trail
South Africa’s very first slow, two-day hiking trail has just been launched by CapeNature. Here are the details…
A new hiking trail for SA
The Western Cape’s coastal De Mond Nature Reserve is now home to South Africa’s first-ever slow overnight hiking trail.
The new ‘relaxed’ trail, called the Damara Trail was launched by CapeNature in celebration of World Tourism Day, on 27 September.
According to CapeNature, De Mond Nature Reserve, near the seaside town of Arniston, will showcase the Damara Trail as an immersive experience in nature, inviting visitors to slow down and enjoy the environment at a leisurely pace.
How slow is a ‘slow hike’?
The slow hiking trail has been designed for ages 8-years and above and is suitable to all fitness levels.
The doable two-day route features a gentle slope, smooth terrain, as well as scenic rest stops along the way.
On day one, hikers will embark on a 5km hike (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes) which will lead them to an overnight wooden deck facility, where tents can be set up.
Day two will then feature an 11.5km hike (approximately 3 hours 45 minutes) along a scenic coastal route, with the hiking trail ending on the beach in Arniston.
“Hikers are encouraged to take their time and savour the experience and natural beauty of the trail. Interpretive signage has been installed along the route. It allows hikers to get to know their surroundings better, with factoids and interesting information on the plants and animals of De Mond and the culture, heritage, shipwrecks, amazing geological formations, and the renowned Waenhuiskrans Cave that make this region an unforgettable destination.” CapeNature says.
Dr Ashley Naidoo, CEO of CapeNature, also adds that the hike allows people to connect with nature at a slower pace and fully enjoy their surroundings.
“We are proud to constantly innovate in our tourism products, whether it be through our accommodation or hiking offerings, and the Damara Trail is sure to be yet another popular activity for loyal and new CapeNature visitors.” Naidoo said.
