Dashcams have become important for courier and trucking companies to keep track of their drivers – and also capture unfortunate incidents like criminals targeting drivers.

As reported in The South African, a dashcam is a video camera that is mounted on the dashboard or windscreen of a car.

Generally powered by the car’s 12v system, it continuously records the view of the road and traffic through the windscreen.

Road safety organisation, Arrive Alive, says: “There has been a significant increase in the interest amongst road users globally towards installing dash camera recorders in their cars.”

The benefits of dashcams have made them popular not only in the trucking industry but also with private vehicle owners. Dashcams can assist drivers in the event of an accident where footage is needed as evidence.

There are many excellent dashcams available in South Africa and many now offer recording in high-definition.

Prices range from R399.
