Durban: Fire leaves thousands homeless in informal settlement

Thousands of people have been left homeless after a fire engulfed 1000 shacks at an informal settlement in Kennedy Road in Durban.

CAUSE OF FIRE STILL UNKNOWN

The fire which which occurred on Sunday morning claimed one life, injuring several others.

Humanitarian aid organization Gift of the Givers came to aid the community and also the firefighters on scene.

“Firefighters were exhausted and dehydrated, we immediately arranged for juices and biscuits for 40 firefighters” the organisation said.

SOUTH COAST BLAZE CLAIMS ONE LIFE

The fire in Durban just comes a week after a fire tore through KwaMasinenge informal settlement in the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

The Department of CoOperative Governance and Traditional Affairs were on site to assist the affected families with meals and restoring important documents and items lost such as ID’s, birth certificates and SASSA cards.

As the country braces the cold this winter MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has urged the public to ensure heating elements are switched off when going to sleep.

“We appeal to communities around the province to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions  such as ensuring heated ot stoves are turned off before sleeping” says the MEC.
