Nkanyiso Zungu suffered the indignity of becoming the first player to be shown the door at Pirates, even before the previous season had ended.

Zungu had been sent out to Richards Bay FC, by Pirates, with the club’s management hoping that  the player could further develop at the club, while getting much needed game time. He ended up amassing just 12 appearances for Richards Bay, however, in what proved to be a rather ill-fated loan spell. The player found himself release from the club before time, with disciplinary issues believed to have been a contributing factor to that decision taken by the KZN club.

That seemed to quickly make up the minds of the Pirates management too, as his release from Richards Bay coincided with the termination of his contract at the Soweto giants. In total, Zungu spent two and half seasons as a Buccaneer, having joined the Houghton-based side from Stellenbosch FC, amid high expectations. Having joined the club during the January transfer window of 2020, he only ended up making five appearance for his new club that season.

In the next season, where was expected to kick on under German tactician Josef Zinnbauer, the player found himself getting into off field issues. Zungu was arrested in connection with alleged Gender Based Violence charges, but those were dropped soon. He struggled to rekindle his football career at Pirates after that and not even a loan spell to Richards Bay could him in that regard. But now according to the latest, the player could be set for another lucky break, with iDiski Times claiming the player is training with another KZN side in Royal AM.

ZUNGU TRAINING WITH ROYAL AM AFTER PIRATES

“Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu is attempting to revive his career as he has been afforded an opportunity to be assessed by Royal AM. While Zungu is being assessed by Royal AM, the club has apparently signed former Golden Arrows attacker Sibusiso Sibeko, who was let go by Marumo Gallants, following the Limpopo side’s relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.” Wrote the publication.

At 27, Zungu will know that he won’t get too many second chances in professional football and after leaving both Pirates and Richards Bay with a stained reputation, he would surely not want to let a big opportunity at Royal AM pass him by.
