Former Orlando Pirates hitman Ndumiso Mabena is now linked with a move to DStv Premiership returnees, Polokwane City as he looks to reignite his career.

Mabena was recently released by the Soweto giants, Pirates and the latest news surrounding the hitman’s future is that he might find a new football home in Polokwane.

Rise and Shine, Polokwane made their return to the Premiership after gaining automatic promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

EX-PIRATES HITMAN HEADING TO POLOKWANE?

Mabena, a former Bloemfontein Celtic and Royal AM skipper has reportedly attracted interest from City, with the Limpopo-based club believing he could be a good investment due to his leadership qualities and experience.

“He comes with a huge amount of experience, and for a team that just got back to the top flight, it is important to get his services,” revealed a source at the Polokwane-based outfit per Phakaaathi.

“He will bring the much needed experience to the team because there are lots of youngsters in the squad.

“They know that he didn’t play much there, but what is important is that he can still play.”

During his second stint at the Mayfair-based Pirates, the former Platinum Stars hitman, Mabena failed to impress coach Jose Riveiro and barely enjoyed regular game time.

Mabena returned to the Buccaneers, Pirates in the January transfer window after terminating his deal with the Durban-based Royal AM owned by controversial businesswoman, Shauwn Mkhize.

MABENA AMONG PLAYERS DISPATCHED

As media outlets and The South African reported, Mabena was among several players who were let go by Pirates last week.

Mabena was shipped out together with the likes of Craig Martin and Nkanyiso Zungu as they were deemed surplus to requirements, but Martin has been signed by Chippa United.

On top of that, the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup champions also parted ways with Ntsako Makhubela, as well as the 23-year-old goalkeeper Kopano Thuntsane.

Should Mabena eventually join City, he could reunite with former Pirates teammate in the form of Mpho Makola who helped the club return to the top tier.
